Frank W. Stones

Frank Stones was born July 23, 1904 in Denver, Colorado. He attended Rice Institute (now Rice University) from 1922-1928 and earned Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Chemical Engineering. His Masters was the first graduate degree in engineering that was conferred by Rice Institute. He worked one year, then went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Additional graduate work was done from 1930-1932 at MIT again in the field of Chemical Engineering. He met his wife, Laurel, in New York and they were married at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in May of 1950. His career was spent as a project engineer designing and building oil refineries and chemical plants. This work allowed him and his wife the privilege of living in Europe and in Australia. Upon retirement in September 1969, Frank and his wife moved to Fort Worth and have been blessed with beautiful friendships with the faculty at the TCU Math Department.

Frank had a great interest in and love of mathematics. Over the years, he attended talks and engaged in mathematical conversations with many members of the department. He passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2004. Frank would have been 100 years old on July 23. His enthusiasm for mathematics and his kind presence will be greatly missed. His donations to the Mathematics Department now fund the research lectureship series named in his honor.
